Notes

Literature: A. S. Davidson, Marine Art and the Clyde, Liverpool, 2001, pg. 148.
Note: In 1867 the iron built 1200 ton 'Carnarvon Castle' was launched at the Whiteinch yard of Barclay, Curle & Co.; she was 229 feet long, 36.3 feet beam, and 22.1 feet depth of hold, and was to form part of Donald Currie's Castle Line. The present picture probably shows her progress leaving the Clyde on her maiden voyage, with Hunter's Quay, the entrance to Loch Long, the 'tail of the Bank' and other points beyond. She was used for Far Eastern trade until 1888, when she was sold and converted to a barque rig for Sinclair & Ellwodd of Liverpool. She had further changes in ownership to German and Norwegian companies until finally in 1910, when on route from London to Antwerp with a cargo of guano, she caught fire and had to be abandoned.
