Description

George Bucher Handcrafted Playable 5 String Twine Banjo. Cherry & Twine Neck, Cherry Pegs, Bevelled Pot, Aluminum Head. 38.5". Original work by George R. Bucher, 1931-2015, Artist, Sculptor, Entertainer, Educator. Bucher attended the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. From 1961- 1965 he served as Associate Professor of Art at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota. From 1965-1984 he was the first full-time art professor at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove PA. He exhibited his artwork all along the East Coast and in 1966 was only the second person (Andrew Wythe being the 1st) to have his art work exhibited at the State Museum in Pennsylvania. In 1960 at a dinner honoring Hubert Humphrey, Bucher presented Humphrey with a twine sculpture of the head of a donkey, symbolizing the Democratic Party. Also of note, in 1970 Bucher spent 10 weeks making a 12 foot ball of twine for Speery Rand Corporation, New Holland, PA. He exhibited his work at many outdoor art shows and frequently won awards. He was also an active banjo player. Believing that no one should retire from what they love to do, he continued to produce art until the end of his life. This auction features 96 lots of Bucher's sculptures, sketches, & paintings.
