George Douglas Pepper 1903 - 1962 Canadian oil on panel Totems, Skeena River AOL1107-E05400-001 12 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches 31.7 x 36.8 centimeters signed and dated 1928 Provenance:Private Collection, Quebec Pepper studied under J.E.H. MacDonald and J.W. Beatty, and was greatly influenced by the Group of Seven. This charming sketch, executed in 1928 while the artist was on a trip in the Skeena River district, depicts the grandeur of the scenery through subtle contrasts and a refined composition. This work is related to the 1929 studio canvas entitled Totem Poles at Kitwanga, in the collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
