NOTE

George Garrard studied with the animal painter Sawrey Gilpin, whose daughter he subsequently married. He maintained a successful practice throughout his career, and had a number of important patrons, including the brewing family of Whitbread, the Duke of Bedford, and the 8th Duke of Hamilton.
