Notes

The River Tees forms the divide between the counties of Yorkshire and Durham. The Great Falls of the Tees, also known as High Force, is the biggest waterfall in England, and was a popular sublime subject for eighteenth century travellers and artists.

Elizabeth Einberg lists a pastel drawing of the same view dated 1747, and an oil version dated 1761, which was probably exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1762 (E. Einberg, 'The works of George Lambert', Walpole Society, LXIII, 2001, cat. no. P1746C and cat. no. P1761 respectively).

VAT rate of 5% is payable on hammer price plus buyer's premium.
