Notes

VARIOUS PROPERTIES
In the present work Reinagle combines a broad, painterly scene with meticulously acurate shipping. Closer inspection reveals rusty, weathered sails suggesting the East Indiaman is homeward bound after considerable time at sea. Hammocks are stowed in the netting suggesting she may be a troop carrier. The fishing boat is marked BN 78 indicating that she is from Brighton; such a vessel is not likely to stray to far from port implying the scene is off the South Coast.

We are grateful to Roger Quarm and Brian Lavery of the National Maritime Museum for their assistance with cataloguing this work.
