N.B. The lot is accompanied by copies of two letters from James McClelland, author of the exhibition catalogue referenced above. In the letter dated May 5, 1978, McClelland suggested the painting at hand was done as a sketch for approval for a larger commissioned work, A View of the Delaware, Near Beverly. Bonfield summered in Beverly and painted many of his Delaware River scenes at that location. The commissioned painting referred to by McClelland is listed on page 30 in the above referenced publication.
