Description

Georges Liautaud, Graveyard Cross, Circa 1959, forged iron. Size: 36" x 22" x 7". Early works by this artist are not signed. This is a rare cross by Georges Liautaud. In 1959, his forged crosses in the graveyard at Croix-des-Boquets attracted the attention of Dewitt Peters, who encouraged him to join the Centre d'Art, where Liautaud pursued the creation of both forged and cut-out metal work. Georges Liautaud was the originator and master of metal sculpture from discarded oil barrels in Haiti. His sculptures can be found in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
