Notes

The Haarlemmerpoort was built in 1615-8 after designs by Hendrick de Keyser. It was the first of a number of gates to the city constructed in the 17th century. In 1837 it was demolished and the present Haarlemmer- or Willemspoort was constructed. The Botermarkt was a marketplace for dairy products and poultry, where, until the late 19th century, fairs were organised every September. When the statue of Rembrandt was erected in 1852, the area was renamed Rembrandtsplein.
