Description

Araucano boy with lama; La Paz landscape. 1932. 2 vintage gelatin silver prints on chamois paper. Each circa 24,5 x 17,5 cm. Each mounted to original card (soiled, slight traces of use), signed and titled by the photographer in pencil below the image on the mount.
The Austrian-born Robert Gerstmann moved to Chile in the 1930s and remained there until his death in 1960. He made extensive portraits of South American natives and his work is illustrated in numerous publications such as Chile (1932), La Antártica Chilena (1948), Columbia (1951). Along with Martin Chambi, Gerstmann is considered one of the major photographers of South America. - First print with minimal oxidation mirroring in right edge, otherwise fine tonal prints in very good condition.
