Notes

The Trabizond Empire (today Trabzon) and capital city of the same name was located on the eastern side of the Black Sea's South Bank. The empire's history was first explored by Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer in his account of the Empire (Munich, 1827-1848). The city's history, however, dates back before the time of Christ; along with Byzantine and Greek sources, Assyrian and Hittite remains also attest to this important harbour on the Black Sea. The portrayed church appears to be today's St. Sophia Museum, which was built from 1238 to 1263.
