With a "completely free composition of irregular cubist elements which are interlaced in a filigree way to a thicket of forms at times flat, at times linear, Giehler stands in the tradition of nonrepresentational constructive abstraction. He sometimes stresses this fact by allusions and quotes (...). Notwithstanding Giehler's paintings' cool virtuality, their artificialness in saturated colours and perfect surfaces: The composition process is never computerised but directly developed on the canvas. Giehler starts with a freely drawn grid or an abstract form: 'Nothing specific basically', he says, 'sometimes perspective is invisible; more important is the fact that paint is put on the canvas before I take the next step. There are no detailed sketches or preparatory drawings and therefore there is no act of transmission.'
Giehler develops the paintings on the canvas directly on the wall (...). The paintings are created in a complex, free painting process involving reactions with other media." (Jens Asthoff, cited and translated from: Exh.cat. Torben Giehler - Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin 2008, p.7 et seqq.).
