Gil Coimbra, contemporary and friend of Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, began his painting career chronicalling the Chaco War (1932–1935) between Bolivia and Paraguay. He also became a politician and diplomat, and spent many years in exile in Mexico and Brazil. This watercolour of a verbena, or street carnival, is typical of his illustrative style.
