Item Overview

Description

Giovanni Bernardi de Castelbolognese (1496-1553)
A Bull Hunt
, oval bronze plaquette, 68.5mm. x 87mm., brown patina

A bull, standing facing to the left with his head lowered, is attacked by three dogs, two horsemen and two men on foot. The exergue is empty.

The composition probably derives from an engraved rock crystal. Bange notes a chalcedony relief in Vienna, published by Tietze-Conrat, and Ricci cites two related 16th century cornelian cameos in Paris.
