Gladstone (Gerald, 1929-2005). Three abstract drawings, pen and ink on thick paper, all signed in pencil, two dated 1962, each approx. 285 x 380 mm (11.25 x 15 ins), together with McNeish (Alexander, 1932-2002), Six abstract paintings, 1960, black ink on paper, all signed and dated in pencil, all but one titled: 'Embracing thorn', Phallic gesture', 'Almost', 'Suspended forms', 'Frustration', some creasing, each approx. 425 x 550 mm (17 x 22 ins) Gerald Gladstone, born to English parents in Canada, was a versatile sculptor and painter, who was initially self-taught. He had his first solo exhibition at the Toronto Art Gallery in 1957. This was followed by more exhibitions, as well as important public commissions. In 1961 he received a grant to come to England and study at the Royal College of Art. He had his first London show, at the Molton Gallery, in 1962. He also exhibited at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1967-68, and in 1964 he had one-man exhibitions at the Hamilton Galleries in London and the Graham Gallery in New York. The Victoria & Albert Museum, National Gallery of Canada, and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts all hold examples of Gladstone's works. (9)
