Item Overview

Description

Bank Holiday Monday signed 'GLUCK' (lower left) oil on canvas, in the artist's frame 10 x 8 in. (25.4 x 20.3 cm.) Painted circa 1937 LITERATURE E. Lucie-Smith, Art Deco Painting, Oxford, 1990, pp. 106-110, illustrated. EXHIBITION London, Fine Art Society, Gluck, November-December 1937, no. 28. London, Fine Art Society, Gluck, April-May 1973, no. 31. NOTES Gluck's exhibition in the autumn of 1937 at the Fine Art Society was, as a result of her mother's remarkably persuasive powers, attended by two Queens; Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary, each having a page to Herself in Gluck's Visitors' Book. Her next exhibition at the Fine Art Society, held in 1973 five years before her death, was her swansong. The present work is sold in the artist's own frame, a style she designed in 1932 and of which she was extremely proud, considering it suitable to become part of any wall in a modern room. She found heavy gold frames out of place and created her own model, as she explains, 'This consisted of steps, imitating the costly panelled effect for setting pictures in a wall, but steps of such character that the usual essence of all frames was reversed and instead of the outer edge dominating, it was made to die away into the wall and cease to be a separate feature' (Gluck, Notes on The Gluck Frame, undated). (See D. Souhami, Gluck her biography, London, 1988, p. 103).
