signed and dated 'Godfried Guffens/1868' (lower right); and with a further inscription on the frame 'Wie der frühling die blumen mir gebt so geb ich küse gern der geliebten; und hier sey mit dem küse der kranz' (Like the Spring showers us with flowers, I gladly shower my beloved with kisses. And with this kiss I crown you').
