Steell was the son of an Edinburgh engraver, and brother of Sir John Steell, the sculptor whose work included the statue of Sir Walter Scott for the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens. Gourlay Steell studied with Robert Lauder under Sir William Allan at the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh, and rose to become arguably the leading Scottish sporting painter. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1832 until his death, and at the Royal Academy from 1865 to 1880. On the death of Landseer in 1873, he was appointed Animal Painter for Scotland to Queen Victoria, and several works by him remain in the Royal Collection.
