Notes

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION

We have very little biographical information about Gregorius de Coninck, the painter of still lifes from Amsterdam. His works are exceptionally rare: there are only about ten paintings by or attributed to the artist. Their style suggests an awareness of, or even a possible apprenticeship under, Jan Davidsz. de Heem during his Antwerp period. The present work is very close to another still life by de Coninck sold at Sotheby's, London, 13 December 2001, lot 18.
