REMARQUABLE SUITE DE 4 FRONTISPICES ET 422 PLANCHES DE COSTUMES GRAVEES A L'AQUATINTE ET COLORIEES A L'EPOQUE.

Les pays d'Europe couvrent deux volumes ; les continents de l'Asie, de l'Amérique et de l'Afrique un volume chacun.
Il existe au moins deux émissions différentes de cet ouvrage paru en livraisons, avec des modifications tant de texte que dans le nombre de planches ; le présent exemplaire se rapproche de ceux de la BnF et du docteur Flandrin décrits par Monglond.

Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757-1810) tint sans doute de son origine - il naquit à Montréal en 1757 et n'arriva en France qu'en 1764, après la conquête de la Nouvelle France par les Britanniques - son goût des voyages. « Diplomate, écrivain, dessinateur et aquafortiste, [il] était un polygraphe prolifique, conforme à l'esprit encyclopédiste du XVIIIe siècle. Il fit paraître en 1795-1796 chez Deroy une encyclopédie composée de cinq volumes et intitulée Encyclopédie des voyages » (BnF, Lumières, nº 227 : le catalogue reproduit une planche du volume consacré à l'Afrique montrant des Maures s'emparant d'esclaves).

Bel exemplaire en reliure moderne. Il présente en double 2 pages de texte et une planche sur les Habitants de la Savoye.
Ex-libris manuscrit découpé et restauré au titre du tome II. Quelques rousseurs.

(Monglond, La France révolutionnaire III, 756-770 : dénombre 421 planches dont une en double. Deux planches de notre exemplaire ne figurent pas dans l'exemplaire décrit par le bibliographe.- Colas, nº 1292 : annonce 432 planches en tout, dont 4 frontispices).

PRE-EMPTION

In certain cases, the French State is entitled to use its right of pre-emption on works of art or private documents. This means that the state substitutes itself for the last bidder and becomes the buyer. In such a case, a representative of the French State announces the exercise of the pre-emption right during the auction and immediately after the lot has been sold, and this declaration will be recorded in the official sale record. The French State will have then fifteen (15) days to confirm the pre-emption decision. Pierre Bergé & associés will not be held responsible for any administrative decisions of the French State regarding the use of its right of pre-emption.
