A view of the entrance to the Giardino del Lago, Villa Borghese inscribed and dated 'Villa Borghese/1844' (lower left) oil on paper laid down on canvas 123/4 x 18 in. (32.4 x 45.7 cm.) PROVENANCE John Lishawa, London. with Crawley and Asquith Ltd., London. EXHIBITION London, Crawley and Asquith Ltd., The Art of the Landscape: Classical, Neo-Classical and en plein air 1650-1900, 1988, no. 57. NOTES Gustav Wilhelm Palm entered the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm in 1828, where he was a student of Carl Johan Fahlcrantz. In 1840, he left for Italy, and after spending six months in Venice he arrived in Rome. For ten years he was a central figure in the Swedish artists' colony there, producing landscapes characterized by a topographically exact, classicizing manner and many watercolors and plein-air oil studies such as the present work. He returned to Stockholm in 1852, where for the rest of his career he painted a large number of landscapes and architectural pictures with Italian themes. From 1859 he was a highly regarded lecturer at the art academy's school of drawing and in 1867 he was awarded the Order of Gustave Vasa.
