Elizabeth Hamilton, the artist's sister, in cornflower-blue satin robe à la française with white lace-lined stomacher, blue ruched ribbon bow tied around her neck, pearls interweaving her brown upswept hair
signed and dated 'Ham.n 1769.'
on ivory
oval, 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.) high, gilt-metal frame, the reverse centred with a glazed oval containing the fine hairwork inscription 'UN MARI EH', the gilt-metal surround engraved 'The Gift of a Sincere Friend'
