Description

H. W. Kerr Portrait and Related Scottish Items,: Henry Wright Kerr, RSA, RSW (Scottish, 1857-1936), watercolor on paper, portrait of Alexander Roberts commissioned in 1903 by the subject's father, Thomas Roberts of Roberts' Tweeds, Edinburgh and Laird of Drygrange. Kerr, an artist with the Glasgow Boys' School of painters; signed LL "HWK." Housed under glass in the original ornate gilt composition frame bearing the framer's label "Aitken Dotson May 1842 Carvers and Gilders , 26 So. Castle St., Edinburgh," SS 19" x 14.5"; DOA 27" x 25". Also related to the Roberts Family and Drygrange are the following: World War I Silver Print, "4th (Imperial Service) Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers / September, 1914," 15.5" x 18" DOA, a group portrait of officer's, including Captain Alexander T. Roberts. A very few marginal spots, else excellent condition; Custom album, "Drygange 1902", oblong 4to (8.5" x 11.5"), containing (24) silver prints, each 5" x 7.5", mounted to 12 board leaves, maroon calf covers with gilt tooled title on cover. Wear to cover, split along spine, browning to leaves. Prints remain in fine condition; Photograph showing Sir Walter Scott's home as visible from Drygrange, 8" x 9.75"; Curle, James, "A Roman Fort and Its People: The Fort of Newstead in the Parish of Melrose," (Glasgow: James Maclehose and Sons, 1911), 431 pp., 4to (11.75" x 8.75"), blue linen boards. Loose binding, wear to covers. Good condition. A fascinating excavation report on Roman antiquities uncovered at Drygrange. The fort, dating to the 2nd c. A.D., was at the northern extremity of the Roman Empire. (2) 1950s booklets, 8" x 5", "Drygrange: Past and Present" and "Fisherman's Map of Salmon Pools on the Tweed." Very good condition. By direct descent from the sitter.
