A Picturesque Tour of the Island of Jamaica. London: Hurst and Robinson, 1825

Folio (14 x 10 in.; 356 x 254 mm). 21 handcolored engraved plates by Carwright, Clarke, Egerton, Fielding, and Sutherland after Hakewill; light offsetting to title-page, the plates very bright. Contemporary pink paper boards, plain endpapers; rebacked in calf, smooth spine diapered gilt, some soiling, corners bumped.

First edition. Hakewill's views of Jamaica were issued in seven parts between 1824 and 1825. The introduction incorporates Hakewill's interesting observations about race relations and the practice of slavery ont he island. Some of the text and plates are various watermarked J. Whatman | Turkey Mill and dated 1821, 1822, and 1823. A fine, bright copy.
