Lot 53: HALE, KATHLEEN. B. 1898.

Original watercolor, crayon and pencil drawing, mounted to board, signed lower right ("K. Hale"), signed again and titled, "A Bicycle Made for Five," on the verso of frame backing, 8 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches.

Depicts Orlando, his wife Grace, and their three mischievous kittens: Blanche, Pansy and Tickle as they set out on a camping trip. It is from the first of the very popular Orlando series, published in 1938.
Provenance: A lengthy letter from Hale to Mr. Benson, dated 1979 and discussing his acquisition of this work is included with the lot.
