Notes

Han Schuil makes hard-edged paintings on aluminium, depicting familiar objects quickly registered by the eye. The paintings reflect something of the urbanized Netherlands of the present, designed down to the last detail. They are crisp, clear images with the immediate impact of a logo. The synthetic colours, shapes and balanced compositions give the paintings a strong signalling effect, while the irregular contours and surfaces add strength to their physical appearance. Schuil's portrayals are based on commonplace objects, images he happens to encounter. 'My paintings should have the impact of a traffic sign and the intensity of a Flemish Primitive. They must represent a moment that makes you want to stand still.'

Han Schuil is a former advisor at the Rijksakademie.
