Notes

It seems that Lang spent approximately three years in Freiburg im Breisgau, circa 1593-6. It is interesting that there the armorial shield was left blank. While it is perfectly reasonable to make such decorative surrounds without a specific commission in mind, it is usually assumed that the saints and subsidiary scenes within the composition were selected for their specific significance to the patrons.
