The present chalk lithograph by Hans Escher (1918-1993) was executed in October 1956 and depicts a drinker sitting at a bar table and presumably accompanied by the hostess. The scenery appears almost sketchy as if the artist wanted to give a short impression of a worker’s life.

The chalk lithograph on vellum is in very good condition considering its age. It is numbered and signed in pencil lower right ‘9/12 H. Escher‘ as well as dated in the stone lower left ‘10.1956‘. The work is framed under an original mat. The back side shows the artist’s atelier stamp as well as some further inscriptions such as the hand-written title ‘Bartrinker’. The overall matted dimensions are 65.3 x 50 cm. The size of the displayed image is 38 x 30 cm.

Hans Escher (1919 – 1993)
From 1935 onwards Hans Escher studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Ch. Guérin. After his return to Vienna in 1946, he completed his print studies at the ‘Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst’ in Vienna. Since 1965, he was a member of the Vienna Secession. Escher is foremostly known as a printmaker and completed several cycles in this medium (e.g. Sacco di Roma, ten images to the book of Hiob). His themes reach from the portrayal of single people in solitude, to satires and to realistic images of urban life. Later he engaged himself with still life painting, which he often combined with complex topics. (cbo)
