Notes

St Francis de Paola was the founder of the reformed Franciscan order of the Minimes. He was born in Paola in Calabria on the road between Naples and Reggio, and was a hermit by the age of 15. In 1436 he founded the Minimes who chose to keep Lent all year round and whose motto was Charity and Love to all mankind. He was called to France by Louis XI. After the king's death he was detained in France and legend has it that when he was refused passage across the strait of Reggio he spread his mantle and passed across.
