Notes

This design was made for the Basel couple Lux Gebhardt the Younger and Elizabeth Rechburger, who married in 1579. Stylistically, the drawing can be associated with Plepp's early Basel period, circa 1582. The elaborate border, with its female allegorical figures derives from one that appears in a series of woodcut portraits by Tobias Stimmer, which are dated between 1574 and 1577 (fig. 1).υ1 Plepp has taken Stimmer's decorative prototype and elaborated it with an illustration of the story of Horatius Cocles. Plepp left his native Biel for Schaffhausen in around 1574, moving on to Basel some four years later. There he lived and worked until 1595, when he moved once more, to Bern, where he spent his final years. Throughout his career, Plepp was heavily influenced by the work of Stimmer. 1.
