Item Overview

Description

Harry Berman (PA, 1900-1932), Pennsylvania Hills, oil on canvas, signed lower left, housed in the original carved wood frame with gilt and gesso. Retaining original paper label reading "(Pe)nnsylvania Hills / $250 / Harry G. Berman." A native of Philadelphia, Berman received his training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and with Fred Wagner. He maintained a studio in Philadelphia and worked at New Hope during the summers throughout the 1920s. He exhibited frequently at the major juried exhibitions at the national level and was considered to be at the threshold of a great career before his premature death at the age of thirty-two of tuberculosis, probably contacted during his service in Europe during the First World War. As a result of his early death, Berman's body of work is relatively small and appears infrequently on the market. The current offering is one of four paintings acquired directly from the artist by the mother of the former owner. SS 19.75" x 23.5"; DOA 25.75" x 29.5"
