Attila, the leggy bay colt was foaled in 1839, by Colwick (b.1828) and out of Progress (b. 1833, by Langar) was trained by John Scott and ridden to the Derby win in 1842 by his son William Scott. Attila was owned by Col. George Anson when the three year old went off at 5/1 odds earning over 70,000 pounds. The classic winner went on to sire other champions, such as the 1850 victor of the French Oaks Fleur de Marie and the 1850 French 2,000 Guineas chmapion, Saint Germain, a three-year old chestnut colt out of the 1837 St. Patrick mare, Currency.
