Notes

"O zoete lieve Aspasia! [...] Hij heeft u lief tot in zijn darm [...] Tot in zijn darm" [He loves you to the gut, to the gut]". In 1787 the poem Alrik en Aspasia was published by Rhijnvis Feith, probably the most sentimental poet of Dutch Romanticism, and that means a lot. The melodramatic poem immediately became the subject of ridicule. The same year Johannes Kinker issued a parody for which he wrote the music himself: "de laatste herhaling die ik op ieder couplet laat volgen, is een chorus die ik eigenlijk voor de zogenaamde sentimentelen in den lande gecomponeerd heb" [the last repetition that I add to each verse is a chorus that I actually composed for the so-called sentimental people in the country] (source: Willem van den Berg and Hanna Schouten (ed.). De duinen gillen mee! [...]. Amsterdam, Singel, 1997, p. 6-9, and 182). It was Kinker's adaptation that inspired Van Loon to add images to the text and music, so that we can now fully experience Alrik's remarkable declaration of love. Jhr. Pieter van Loon was known as the illustrator of the well-known book 'Tafereelen uit de Geschiedenis des Vaderlands' by Jacob van Lennep (Amsterdam, M.H. Binger, 1854). The eight drawings in this lot cover the full story of the reunion of returning soldier Alrik with his old lover Aspasia. Museum van Loon owns the largest collection of his works and this strangely enough not by inheritance: only last year a private collector donated more than 750 original drawings.
