Notes

Heinrich Gotlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (German, 1793-1879)

Born in Liepzig on 8th January 1793, Reichenbach possessed an abiding interest in Botany and Ornithology. Throughout his life he promoted the study of plant life and Natural History, particularly in Dresden where he lived. It was here that he became a Professor of the local university, setting up various societies and exhibitions to encourage public interest in Botany and Ornithology, for which he was much praised by the Authorities. He was also given the monumental task of overseeing the regeneration of city's Botanical Gardens as Director, to which he did with great success.

As well as writing and publishing numerous works including 'Icones Florae Germanicae', Reichenbach also became a prolific and very able artist, bringing to life his studies with exacting detail and vibrant use of colour.

The collection of Ornithological pictures viewed, is varied in content with over 80 studies of European breeds as well as exotic birds from South America and Africa, and lends us a glimpse into his overriding interest in Ornithology and emotive passion for Nature.

This lot contains 11 pictures, not as printed in the catalogue.
