Literature

The drawing by Hendrik Avercamp is in Teylers Museum, Haarlem. Lit.: T. Laurentius, J.W. Niemeijer and G. Ploos van Amstel, 'Cornelis Ploos van Amstel 1726-1798, Kunstverzamelaar en Prentuitgever', Assen, 1980, p.259, no.8. The 'Ectypa' of Ploos van Amstel, since that was the Latin term Ploos van Amstel used to describe his plates on the first title-page. A series of print drawings of Dutch and Flemish artists. They were published by Ploos van Amstel in separate small sets between 1765 and 1787. Because Ploos van Amstel hired several printmakers to assist him in the production of the plates, it is not always clear which plates have been made by Ploos van Amstel himself and which by his assistants (who were not allowed to reveal the extent of their participation or details of the techniques they used). They include, amongst others, Bernard Schreuder, Cornelis Brouwer, Johannes Körnlein, Jacobus Buys, Jurriaan Cootwijk and Christian Dietrich. Most of the plates were also available separately. They usually have Ploos van Amstel's coat of arms printed on the verso as proof of authenticity.
