One of the most significant events in the history of South Africa was the Boer War of 1899-1902. This war was fought between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics, the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic). Although the protagonists were Britain and the two Boer Republics, the population of South Africa as a whole became embroiled in the war either directly or indirectly.
