NOTE

Henri-Victor Regnault was one of the most important photographers of the so-called 'primitive' era and yet his work is not widely known. He is known to have exhibited his work only three times, twice in England (in 1852 and 1854) and once in France (in 1855). Regnault and Robert worked closely together from 1848 and, in the early 1850s, both made studies of the Palace of Saint Cloud. This negative, which comes from the Robert archive, has been attributed to Regnault on the basis of its large format.
