Notes

Henrik Lund received his first artistic training from Harriet Backer in 1899, but later developed his painting style under the influence of Christian Krohg, Edvard Munch and Ludvig Karsten. Lund was responsible for organising The Six exhibition in Berlin and Copenhagen in 1910. The exhibiting group comprised Norway's New Impressionists: Ludvig Karsten, Bernhard Folkestad, Theodor Laureng, Søren Onsager, Anders Svarstad and Lund himself. The sitter, Knut Hamsun, is one of the most renowned names in the history of Norwegian literature and - apart from Ibsen - the most internationally well known.
