Notes

Henry Alfred Pegram was born in London and studied at the West London School of Art, before attending the Royal Academy Schools from 1881. He was studio assistant for Hamo Thornycroft from 1887 to 1891, and his early work was also influenced by Alfred Gilbert. Specialising in decorative and ideal work, Pegram modelled a number of reliefs, many architectural in size. The present work, Perseus and Andromeda was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1907, and in its style and composition is reminiscent of Pegram's earlier and better known relief of 1889, 'Ignis Fatuus'. Both sculptures exhibit the influence of Gilbert's symbolist structure on Pegram's work.
