NOTE

In the early 1890s Marcus Daly, who had emigrated from Ireland in 1841, retained Cross to paint at his horse ranch in Montana. Child of the Mist, foaled at Newmarket in 1892, had been a highly successful racehorse in England before being imported to America in 1890. Daly commissioned this portrait to honor the horse's many successful offspring.

The stretcher is incribed To Marcus Daly. Esq- H.H. Cross-Anaconda, Montana.
