1385. JOSEPH HENRY (1797-1878) American scientist who built the first electric motor and later became first Secretary of the Smithsonian. Fine content A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, Oct. 10, 1851 to Sec. Wm. Prescott Smith asking that he convey his thanks to the Board of Managers of the Maryland Institute for his election as a member of the association, and Henry pledges: "...to cooperate with them in any way in my power in their labors to promote and diffuse knowledge...". Fine. Matted with a photo and brass plaque, set into a wood frame. $150-200
