Notes

When exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1806 the picture was accompanied by a quotation from Spenser's The Fairie Queen "One mother, wheneas her foolehardy chyld did come too neare". The scene depicted is the dead dragon, vanquished by St George, who is visible riding off in the distance.
