Notes

Henry Warren's illustrations were engraved by Edward Finden for Lord Bryon's Childe Harolds Pilgrimage, a Romaunt (London, 1841).

The present lot illustrates the following verses:

For ere nights' midmost, stillest hour was past,
The native revels of the troops began.
Each Palikar his sabre from him cast,
And bounding hand in hand, man linked to man,
Yelling their uncouth dirges, long daunced the kirtled clan.

(Canto II - LXXI)

To feed the crow on Talavera's plain
And fertilize the field that each pretends to gain -
There shall they rot, ambitions honoured. Fools.

(Canto 1 - XLI and XLII)
