Description

Herbert 'Joseph' Cribb (1892-1967). A stone carving for the Eric Gill Studio Workshop depicting Christ on the cross, and with figures at his feet, inscribed 'AMOR MEUS CRUCI-FIXUS EST' in red text and with lead 'nails', the reverse inscribed 'H.J.Cribb 1927', 30cm x 30cm. 'Joseph' Cribb was recruited by Eric Gill as his apprentice in 1906 whereupon he was taught letter cutting and masonry skills by his master. Following the First World War on his return from France he joined Eric Gill amongst others in setting up the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic on Ditchling Common. He became a prolific worker of stone carvings and decorative stone work and there are many examples of his work still in existence. Some examples of his work can be seen in Ditchling Museum and his life and works are well documented. Provenance: The vendor is the granddaughter of Lawrence Cribb who was Joseph Cribb's brother and who also worked for Eric Gill.
