Item Overview

Description

Hermann Mühlen(1886 Düsseldorf - 1964 München). Zwei liegende Akte in einer Landschaft. 1921 Oil on canvas . Signed and dated lower left.85 x 190 cm (33,4 x 74,8 in). With a crossed out oil sketch on the reverse Provenienz: From the artist's estate. Admitted to the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1904, Hermann Mühlen later studied at both the Düsseldorf Applied Arts School and the Munich Art Academy. Extensive travels to France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy made him thoroughly familiar with the prevailing trends in the art of his day. From 1919 Hermann Mühlen showed work regularly in the Rhineland and in Munich. Apart from nude studies, landscapes, still lifes and paintings with religious content, M2uhlen also designed murals, which differ markedly in style from his other work. Whereas closeness to the 1920s French style is apparent in his figurative compositions and nude studies, his landscapes and still lifes reveal the influence of Cézanne. [NB] Good overall impression. Line tacking margins. All in all barely noticeably shop-soiled. Edges with isolated smaller colour flakings and traces of rubbing. Small superficial colour abrasion on the upper thigh.
