Hess, Heinrich Maria von

Die Fresco-Gemaelde der Königlichen Allerheiligen Hofkapelle zu München. Lithographirt und herausgegeben mit Königlich Bayerischem Allergnädigsten Privilegium und Ihrer Kaiserlich Königlichen Majestät der Kaiserin Mutter von Oesterreich Charlotte Auguste allerunterthänigst und ehrfurchtsvollst gewidmet von J. G. Schreiner. 14 Lieferungen. München, Schreiner, 1837-41. Gr.-Folio (92 x 62 cm). 1 Blatt, 43 (42 getönte) lithographierte Tafeln. In 14 bedruckten Original-Lieferungsumschlägen, eingelegt in eine zeitgenössische Halbledermappe.

Vollständiges Exemplar der ersten Ausgabe. - Thieme-B. XVI, 580 (Hess), Thieme/Becker XXX, 284 (Schreiner). - Sehr gut erhalten. Leider durchgehend stockfleckig, teils auch stärker.

14 issues. Munich, Schreiner, 1837-41. Folio (92 x 62 cm). 1 sheet, 43 (42 tinted) lithographed plates. In 14 printed original wrappers, inserted in half leather folder. Complete copy of the first edition. - Splendid, very well preserved and large-sized series of carefully lithographed plates of the artists Schreiner, Weiss, Müller, Seitz, Herwegen, Koch, and Engelmann, published by Hanfstaengl, Küstner, Kammerer, and Fuchs and Minsinger. Published on the event of the recent completion of fresco paintings in the Royal All Saints' Court Chapel in Munich based on designs by Heinrich von Hess between 1830 and 1837, which were executed by Johann Schraudolph, his younger brother Claudius a.o. Hess joined the Nazarenes and, at the suggestion of Peter Cornelius, was appointed professor at the Munich Academy by Ludwig I in 1826. Like the frescoes created by Hess in Munich's St. Boniface Basilica, these too were lost with the destruction of the Second World War. - Mostly only minimally stained and with occasional small marginal tears. In addutuin: The same twelve fresco paintings in the Basilica in Munich from the life of St. Boniface, composed and painted by Heinrich von Hess. Engraved after the original cartons under the direction of professor Thäter at the Royal Academy of Arts by Burger, Barfuß, Walde & Zimmermann. Published by the Kunst-Verlag für religiose Werke & Bilder in Munich by F. Gypen & R. Frisch. Munich, F. Gypen & R. Frisch, (1862). Large transverse folio (47.5 x 65 cm). Title page, 12 sheets of plate explanation in German, Latin, and French, 12 steel engraving plates on rolled-on China. Original paperback with mounted cover title. - Today untraceable steel engraving sequence and a rarity of the first rank. - Of greatest importance for the history of fresco painting in the 19th century as well as the sacred building in Munich, based on the frescoes of the Basilica St. Bonifaz by Heinrich Maria von Hess. Today, only a few colour lithographs give an impression of the fresco paintings in the Basilica, which were lost with the destruction of the Second World War. Twelve large-format pictures on the walls of the nave tell of the life and work of Saint Boniface. - Very well preserved. Unfortunately throughout foxing, partly stronger.

The Auctioneer shall also have the right to submit bids on behalf of the Consignor until a reserve agreed with the Consignor is met and - if necessary - knock down the work of art stating the lot number given in the Catalogue to the Consignor; in such case the work of art shall remain unsold.
