Notes

From the collection of Gilbert Thompson, a founding member of the National Geographic Society. Under the leadership of John Wesley Powell, who was appointed director of the U. S. Geological Survey in 1881, this survey drew attention to the aridity of the American southwest. Powell unsuccessfully campaigned for federal support of irrigation projects and dams, and resigned as director in 1894.
