Item Overview

Description

Jodocus (1594-1629). Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula, [Amsterdam:] 1617. Hand-coloured engraved twin-hemisphere world map, symbols of the four seasons and elements in each corner, 2 celestial globes (some minor repairs on verso), 393 x 582mm. Second state. Shirley 296; Wagner 274. "This 1617 map is of particular interest as it is the prototype for a whole series of derivative maps and, in its second state still dated 1617, seems to have been the first to record Le Maire's strait close to the tip of South America... Decoratively, the map is one of the most attractive. The corners contain scenes of the four seasons: Ver or Spring shows gardeners tending a formal Dutch garden; Aestas or Summer is the time for sheep-shearing; Autumn brings the grape harvest in for wine-pressing; and in Hyems or Winter skaters revel on a frozen lake.".
