Notes

Hong Tong's career is legendary--not only did he begin as an amateur without any formal art training, he also started to paint when he was already fifty years old. His works began to call great attention in the 1970s, when art and culture in Taiwan were largely looking to the West. Lovely patterns from folk art executed in bright colours and bold black lines became hallmarks of Hong Tong's art. The two works from this auction are fine examples: an energetic spiritual power is exuded through the application of tight brushwork, harmonious repetition of simple patterns and a conscious incorporation of auspicious symbols such as birds, fish and flowers. In Untitled, many patterns are similar to the charms from Chinese Daoism, adding a sense of mystery and an air of primitivism.
