Item Overview

Description

HOPE, Thomas (1769-1831). Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, executed from Designs by Thomas Hope. London: T. Bensley for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1807.

2° (570 x 340mm). Half-title. Additional engraved title and 60 plates after Hope. (Some light spotting.) 19th-century calf gilt, red spine label, marbled endpapers and edges (rubbed, lightly worn at extremities, headcap torn).

LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of 'the most important English furniture design book of the early nineteenth century' (Musgrave, 1970 facsimile edition). It contains what is considered the earliest use of the term 'interior decoration' and contributed to the fashion for mixing styles (Greek, Roman, Turkish, Chinese, etc.) eclectically by depicting the furnishings, made to his own designs, in his Duchess Street house. Dedicated to the classical ideal, Hope used his considerable fortune to influence taste, specifically to influence modern design according to classical standards. The publication of Household furniture successfully served his didactic aims, and influenced subsequent generations of designers up to the modern day. Abbey Life, 24; Archer 448.1; RIBA 1547.
